The Use Of Recycled Asphalt Millings

Posted on

Pavement milling involves removing the top layer of asphalt through a grinding process. Pavement milling will reduce the height of a paved surface and prevent drainage issues. The recycled asphalt millings can be used as an aggregate base coat for a future paving project or can be used to construct a driveway, fill holes, or add stability to a hardscaped surface.

The Benefits Of Using Millings

If you want to create a driveway that utilizes an aggregate, crushed stone, gravel, or sand may come to mind. Each of these materials may naturally wash away or not be effective in preventing the accumulation of snow and ice. Asphalt millings are long-lasting and eco-friendly.

Because millings are considered recycled material, they usually cost less than other aggregate types that are mass-produced. Millings will not harm plant growth in the area where they are laid out and will only create a minimal amount of dust.

The Screening Process

After the asphalt is crushed into 3/4 inch pieces, the aggregate is screened. During the screening process, any pieces of asphalt that were not effectively cut to size will be separated from smaller materials. With the use of millings, a home or business owner will likely want to create a surface that is fairly consistent. By having access to a batch of asphalt pieces that are uniform in size and texture, an asphalt aggregate surface will be level and provide adequate traction.

The Application And Hardening Process

The area where millings will be applied should be graded first. Proper grading will allow water to run off in the direction desired. A dump truck can be used to add millings to a worksite. The asphalt pieces will need to be spread out. Spreading can be performed with a roller attachment.

Some asphalt paving companies that sell recycled products may offer an emulsified product. Asphalt pieces that are 3/4" may be combined with water. The mixture will be easy to spread and will harden when it dries. Compacting an asphalt aggregate will also aid in hardening a surface.

A specialized sealant product will add a hard, protective layer to a layer of asphalt millings. After millings have been laid out, a sealant can be sprayed onto the millings and brushed across a paved surface. If millings are being used to fill a hole or to support an existing hardscaped area, a shovel can be used to apply and spread the materials. After the recycled asphalt pieces have been compacted, a sealant can be applied.
